3 Essential Salad Dressings

3 Essential Salad Dressings

My philosophy on dieting and eating is to get married instead of getting divorced. When we focus on breaking up with foods we are passionately in love with, we are setting ourselves up for relapse and heart break. When we allow ourselves to fall deeply, madly in love with foods that we don’t ever have…

balance {selective neglect}

balance {selective neglect}

I recently heard the best explanation of the term “balance” ever…. “selective neglect”.  (For example…even though I haven’t published a blog post in weeks- actually months- I’m going to stop writing now that I’ve written a sentence and watch a movie with my husband instead. I’ll come back when the time is right.) 9 days…

Sweet Carrot, Lemon and Ginger Soup

Sweet Carrot, Lemon and Ginger Soup

Jesus answered, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6 (Why we start each post with a verse.) I’m always trying to figure out ways to get more bone broth in my family…especially in my picky kids! I recently made this simple carrot…

Pomegranate Salad with Toasted Pumpkin Seed Vinaigrette

Pomegranate Salad with Toasted Pumpkin Seed Vinaigrette

Around the time when pomegranates become in season, I like to spend some time every week removing all the seeds from pomegranates so I can have a container full of them ready for anything. (Make sure to wear protective clothing when working with pomegranates. I always find pomegranate juice spots on the opposite side of…

Roasted Corn, Tomato, Sweet Onion and Salmon Salad with Creamy Herb Dressing

Today I’m guest posting at GNOWFGLINS with this beautiful and delicious salad! Summer may be officially over, but in most areas of the country the late season harvest is still in full bloom. This delicious recipe isn’t a light salad, but a satisfying, nutrient-dense mixture of ingredients that touches on all the taste points of…

We’re Juicing!

September 17, 2014 by Roz 3 Comments

We’re Juicing!

This summer two very exciting things happened… We had a BABY! We also finally jumped on the juicing bandwagon. (Yes, the first was kind of WAY more important.) Juicing vegetables and fruits can be an excellent way to get a blast of nourishing vitamins and minerals straight into the blood stream. Dr. Mercola states that juicing…

Homemade Fruit Refreshers

Homemade Fruit Refreshers

We make a ton of smoothies, and try to avoid drinking juice unless it’s really good quality or homemade. This “refresher” recipe is sort of a mix between a smoothie and juice, made only with fruit, herbs, honey and water. I make it with frozen fruit, but you don’t have to. I make a gallon…

Sweet Lime Glazed Crispy Chicken Tacos + Grain Free Bowls

This is a delicious impromptu recipe I made that I snapped some photos of that I wanted to share. It was delicious either as a taco or a grain-free/gluten-free salad bowl, so everyone can enjoy this one! I like to fry in lard, so if that freaks you out make sure to check out this…

This Week’s Homeschooling Theme: Independence Day {Link Party!}

This Week’s Homeschooling Theme: Independence Day {Link Party!}

As homeschoolers, we aren’t really taking a “summer break” because my goal as a homeschooler is to make learning a natural, ongoing, exciting part of life. I’m trying to think of themes to stick to every week. This helps me design our homeschooling plans based on what’s actually happening in life and what is interesting to the…

Blackberry Lavender Scones

Blackberry Lavender Scones

If you had to pick 5 fruits you couldn’t live without, what would they be? I know, it’s a difficult question. Did you forget strawberries? Peaches? Blueberries? Watermelon? Well, those are on my top list (especially watermelon, which happens to be my favorite food. Not just fruit…food!)

Welcome to the farm! #turkeys #ducks #chicks #realfoodfamilyhomestead🙌 I posted yesterday about eliminating waste. I absolutely believe chickens solve many issues that plague our culture. They can eat all your kitchen scraps- even egg shells! Backyard chickens will produce wonderful eggs for your family so you don’t need to buy commercially raised (almost always inhumanely raised and horrible for the environment). Their poop produces easy to use fertilizer for your garden. They can irrigate and fertilize your garden before and after growing season. They seriously are so easy- their instincts guide them to almost completely take care of themselves. We have chickens in the country but so do my parents and many friends who live in the city! Who out there has chickens? Who wants them and has questions?? 🐔🐣 #chickens #sustainable #organic #natural #pastureraised #votewithyourfork #backyardchickens #environment #savetheworld #commercialfarming #organicfarming #homestead #homesteading #bethechangeI love this super simple idea from @sproutedkitchen for her “bits bowl”. I think one of the greatest played of western culture is the wastefulness- especially good. On so many levels, food and “stuff” waste is something we all can consistently improve on.

This is “food waste” week for #learnmorewasteless with @imperfectproduce in honor of earth month! They are a co. that saves thousands of lbs of food waste, by distributing surplus or misshapen fruits and veg to their customers (use code sproutedkitchen for 20% off your first order). Not wasting food pulls my heart strings. I know that good, healthy food is a privilege, and it is my responsibility to not take advantage of that. Above is my “bits bowl”. I keep it on our small island where I do my chopping and prep. I keep the extra pieces of citrus or garlic cloves or whatever bits that are fine to sit out (I cook often, but I’d bet you would reach for this more frequently than you’d think). This reminds me to use them, saves plastic wrap and prevents these bits and bobs from getting buried in the fridge. What are you doing to fight food waste in your home? Small changes add up! Comment below, would love to share ideas with each other 🌎Homesteading drama is worth it all when you can nourish your family out of your yard. I’m so glad the chickens are all laying consistently again. 😍🐔 #realfoodfamilyhomestead #realfodfamilyeats #realfood #homestead #chickens #backyardchickens #natural #sustainable#homeschool. Just sayin’Couldn’t have said it better myself! Repost from @countrylivingmag
