This Week’s Homeschooling Theme: Independence Day {Link Party!}

June 29, 2014 by Roz 3 Comments

As homeschoolers, we aren’t really taking a “summer break” because my goal as a homeschooler is to make learning a natural, ongoing, exciting part of life. I’m trying to think of themes to stick to every week. This helps me design our homeschooling plans based on what’s actually happening in life and what is interesting to the kids. Of course we have camps and other things happening during the summer, so we’ll lighten the load a bit, but we’re still learning!

Of course, you don’t have to be a homeschooler to keep learning through the summer!

This week our theme is the 4th of July…or Independence Day! I’ve come up with a list of ideas for what to study, learn and do this week. I’m also going to start something new on the blog: a chance for other bloggers to share posts that fit with our weekly themes! It can be recipes, crafts, lesson plans, or any other resources that go with the theme.

I’m calling on my online “village” to help me out with our new direction in homeschooling!

Fourth of July Theme Ideas *blogger link party- add your posts* ~ Real Food Family #homeschooling #fourthofjulyrecipes #fourthofjulycrafts #fourthofjulylessons

Here’s What I Have Planned For The Week:

  • Recipes: Patriotic Fireworks Gelatin Snacks (lemonade gummy snacks with blueberries and raspberries- get gummy recipes here), 4th of July Dessert Kebabs
  • History: Learn About What the 4th of July is all about: watch Liberty Kidz on YouTube (click here for the link to part one, then you’ll be directed to watch part 2)
  • History/Social Studies: Study the Continental Congress, Independence, the Declaration of Independence, Author and Key Signers of the Declaration of Independence
  • Science: Discover how Fireworks Work
  • The History of the American Flag (Betsy Ross)
  • Practice the Pledge of Allegiance (and Pledge to the Christian Flag and Bible)
  • Craft: Sew or Paint an Original American Flag (sewing is optimistic)
  • Music: Learn the Star Spangled Banner
  • Bible: Read, Memorize and Journalize Bible versus and stories related to government and explain why the United States isn’t in the Bible (*My 6 year old is starting a journal of all the Bible verses she is learning both to help her memorize and practice writing.)
  • Math: Practice counting money and discover the American elements on coins and bills
  • Free Printables: Declaration of Independence, Declaration of Independence Coloring Page, American Flag, Fireworks
  • More4th of July craft ideas recently posted on Real Food Family’s “School at Home” Pinterest page

In addition to our theme stuff, we will continue working through regular math workbooks and practicing English with our Logic of English curriculum as usual.

Now it’s time to share your 4th of July Posts!

If you’re a blogger or have a website with Independence Day-themed posts you’d like to share, then add your link here! It doesn’t have to be a homeschooling post, just anything related to our theme. I’ll share my favorite links during the week on my social media pages!

My post is about remembering the people who support our servicemembers. Police, fire, military, EMS, teachers, government officials, etc all have people in their lives who sacrifice so they can do their jobs well. These people deserve to be honored as well.

Virginia, I LOVE that you shared this. It is something I’m going to be talking about with the kids this week and emphasizing how much we honor, love and support our service men and women!!!

Basic #reallife #realfood quick meal- veggie pesto cous cous and fish nuggets. Yep- fish nuggets! I use an air fryer (love my air fryer!!) to crisp up Trader Joe’s fish nuggets, then on the stove boil some Israeli cous cous in chicken stock (according to package measurements). While that’s happening I chop tomato and bell pepper. When the cous cous is done I mix in a couple tablespoons of butter, a couple tablespoons of pre-made basil pesto, a half cup of frozen or fresh spinach, garlic powder, pepper and salt, as needed. Keep it warming to cook down the spinach and get all the flavors incorporated. It all took about 15 minutes.
#realfoodfamilykitchen #realfoodrecipe #wholefood #veggies #kidfood #easymealSay hello to Stella Luna the Cray Cray Cat. That’s her name. Stella Luna because she looks like the bat from that book. Cray Cray because she has earned the name well- she is crazy. This is the only way she can comfortably lay on the floor.
#catsofinstagram #realfoodfamilypets #crazycatHappy Monday! We are getting back in the habit of bread making. If you search “magic boule” on the blog you’ll find my recipe and unusual method that works every time like a charm! I actually didn’t start with a sourdough culture this time. I just made a yeast dough then saved some of the dough and fed it daily with water and flour, leaving it out in the counter to capture its own wild yeast in the air and continue leavening itself. It always works and I continue to use my magic boule method to keep the “mother” alive for as long as I want. It should just keep souring and incorporating more cultures from the air to keep it alive. Any of you make bread? What’s your method?
#realfood #realfoodfamilykitchen #natural #healthy #bread #glutenisnotthedevil #dailybread #wholefood #traditionalfood #culturedfood #heavenlyWelcome to the farm! #turkeys #ducks #chicks #realfoodfamilyhomestead🙌 I posted yesterday about eliminating waste. I absolutely believe chickens solve many issues that plague our culture. They can eat all your kitchen scraps- even egg shells! Backyard chickens will produce wonderful eggs for your family so you don’t need to buy commercially raised (almost always inhumanely raised and horrible for the environment). Their poop produces easy to use fertilizer for your garden. They can irrigate and fertilize your garden before and after growing season. They seriously are so easy- their instincts guide them to almost completely take care of themselves. We have chickens in the country but so do my parents and many friends who live in the city! Who out there has chickens? Who wants them and has questions?? 🐔🐣 #chickens #sustainable #organic #natural #pastureraised #votewithyourfork #backyardchickens #environment #savetheworld #commercialfarming #organicfarming #homestead #homesteading #bethechangeI love this super simple idea from @sproutedkitchen for her “bits bowl”. I think one of the greatest played of western culture is the wastefulness- especially good. On so many levels, food and “stuff” waste is something we all can consistently improve on.

This is “food waste” week for #learnmorewasteless with @imperfectproduce in honor of earth month! They are a co. that saves thousands of lbs of food waste, by distributing surplus or misshapen fruits and veg to their customers (use code sproutedkitchen for 20% off your first order). Not wasting food pulls my heart strings. I know that good, healthy food is a privilege, and it is my responsibility to not take advantage of that. Above is my “bits bowl”. I keep it on our small island where I do my chopping and prep. I keep the extra pieces of citrus or garlic cloves or whatever bits that are fine to sit out (I cook often, but I’d bet you would reach for this more frequently than you’d think). This reminds me to use them, saves plastic wrap and prevents these bits and bobs from getting buried in the fridge. What are you doing to fight food waste in your home? Small changes add up! Comment below, would love to share ideas with each other 🌎
