October Stuff I Love

I’ve never done this before, but I thought you might like to know what kind of things I’ve been learning on the wonderful world wide web! My fellow bloggers of Village Green Network are some pretty amazing people, and here are some of my favorite October links…

Even though I don’t yet have Halloween costumes for my kids, my “Christmas Time Is Here” Pinterest board is filling up with everything Christmas. These Cranberry Orange Sourdough Muffins look like a perfect Christmas morning recipe…with a lovely cup of Pumpkin Spice Coffee!! In case you want to be ambitious, you can check out this tutorial for making your own sourdough starter!

Pumpkin Seeds toasted with chile and lime sound amazing since pumpkin seeds are in abundance right about now. Chile and lime is one of my favorite flavor combinations, too!

Did you see my article about voting Yes on Prop 37? Here is more awesome information including answers to the objections to Prop 37, debunking the lies being told by the “No on Prop 37” camp. PLEASE stay on top of this issue, and make sure all your loved ones (and facebook friends) in California are voting YES ON 37!!!

Here is a tutorial for Homemade Mascara! An unlikely ambition for me, but I’m totally bookmarking it. Thank Your Body is a great blog to follow, and while I was there I found this helpful post on ways to help your body as it detoxes. (I’m successfully playing guinea pig for a new detox/weight loss/health makeover plan that I will be sharing with you very soon!)

Have you or someone you love ever struggled with breastfeeding- even though they desperately wanted to? I have great compassion for these women, who go through hell trying to successfully breastfeed. Many of these women pull through and enjoy an amazing long term breastfeeding experience. Success relies on support and perseverance. Here is a woman’s struggle and triumph with breastfeeding that is uplifting for all mothers (or aspiring mothers) to read. A quote I love:

There will always be a reason to supplement with formula – a reason to give up – a reason to call it quits! I know so many women who had a smooth breastfeeding road, but started formula feeding anyway because it’s easier and more convenient.

My family does NOT get flu shots (or most other vaccines). Sometimes it’s frustrating to live in this world of vaccinate-or-die…but this family’s 5 reasons they don’t get the flu shot was a good read!

Sometimes the people that follow the Weston A. Price Foundation wish that there were more researchers like him alive and kicking today. Well this anthropologist is like a modern day Dr. Weston A. Price is worth checking out!!

Are you freaking out about letting your kids eat candy on Halloween? Interestingly, this “real food” family gives us reasons to say “okay” to Halloween junk!!!

Ummmm….these posts were nice to read at a certain time this month…Here are natural remedies for menstrual cramps, and how carrots might help with PMS!

The majority of moms trying to feed their families good food find it especially difficult if they are working moms (meaning they work outside of the home IN ADDITION to the crazy job of parenting at home).  You might like this inspiration for doing the “real food” thing as a working mom.

I don’t shop at Costco…BUT, I know many people shop there and I have to appreciate how hard the company is trying to provide good food sources to customers including like raw milk cheese, grassfed beef and organic produce. Did you know you can find good wild fish at Costco?

Do you JUICE? This trendy practice can be really good for you, or really bad for you. Make sure you know what you’re doing before you become a “juicer”. Here is some good information on juicing- to do it or not.

I’m working on getting some good lacto-fermenting tutorials out to you all, but as you anticipate my tutorials, I want to share this wonderful information about the science, history, and reasons to consume lacto-fermented food. I can’t help but love this blog…it’s called “Oh Lardy”!

I LOVE the caramel lusciousness of toasted marshmallows. This has been one of the more difficult treats to totally give up since becoming a “real foodie”, since most- if not all- marshmallows contain hideous ingredients. But there’s hope! Here is a homemade marshmallows recipe!!!!

Do you drink your city water? Do you let your children drink water with fluoride added? Do you use fluoridated toothepaste? I believe the promotion of fluoride is one of the great and dangerous health myths of our time. Learn more about the dangers of fluoride , and make a decision to eliminate this toxin from your life!

Finally, I loved meeting this cute new mom talking about her experience with early potty training (or EC’ing) with her 4 month old. I’ve “EC’ed” now with both my kids (part time) and it’s looking like both will be totally potty trained before their 2nd birthday! It may sound crazy to some people (or too old for others), but this has been extremely simple for us actually. The hardest part is dealing with the kids wanting to be naked all the time at 1 1/2…and getting the extended family used to it.

Happy October, everyone!  Please share YOUR favorite links of the month in the comments!!!!
