Old Cameras

My husband loves shooting photos with old cameras. He comes from a family of photographers and I can boast that my grandmother was a photographer as well…but Brendan is the one who has continued the family hobby.

Remember the days when you had to take your film to the film store and wait for your prints? Remember thinking you needed to keep the negatives for something? Raise your hand if you have a box of old film negatives still waiting to be used for something.

Now raise your hand if you have boxes of printed photos that you will probably not look through again until you’re showing them to your children, teaching them what film was.

It’s actually kind of exciting…anxiously waiting a few days before you can see the results of your photography. When you use old cameras, you get to experience this. I think my husband is sometimes desperate to keep the good ol’ days alive.

This was a dead barn owl we found on the side of the road. (It was freshly dead…um, is that possible? Oh, and Brendan learned the art of photographing dead animals from his mom. It’s actually kind of cool, as long as you have gloves, or a good poking stick to maneuver the corpse.)

We took the pictures then my national-park-ranger-mother-in-law informed us that it is totally illegal to pick up a dead barn owl like this. So for those of you hoping to find dead barn owls on the side of the road…don’t do it! And if you are law enforcement reading this, I promise we are not poachers. We innocently picked up road kill, then returned the whole thing into the wild.

This is the pasture just outside of our neighborhood. The cows visit every couple weeks. The first time they came around after we moved in I thought a cow was loose in the neighborhood because their mooing was so loud it sounded like it was at the end of my driveway. I almost got in the car to go look for the lost cow.

One night I heard a calf crying out all night for it’s mom, and the mom would cry out in response to her calf. It was awful. I wanted to walk out to the pasture in the middle of the night to help. My husband said no. Probably a good idea.
